newsimage

Dear Resident,

I am pleased to invite you to the opening of the Internet Cafe at the Cornhill Village Shop: a Cornhill Parish Council initiative in association with the Village Shop and funded by The Big Lottery Fund: Awards for All.

I will be delighted if you will put the date, time and venue in your diary: Friday, 23rd April, 2010 at 6pm; at the Village Shop. The Mayor of Berwick Councillor Flora Simpson has been invited to officiate; drinks and canapés will be served, generously provided by the proprietors The Collingwood Arms Hotel and The Village Shop.

I look forward to seeing you on this occasion.

Yours sincerely,

David Buckle,
Chair

Update on Water Supply

newsimage

Northumbrian Water has issued the all-clear for the water supply in the Glendale area, and the bowsers have been removed from Cornhill and the surrounding communities.
Fortunately the supply was not affected in most parts of the region, due to the immense amount of work put in by Northumbrian Water staff who were constantly topping up the reservoir in Branxton which serves the local villages.

The Parish Clerk for Cornhill and Branxton has written to Northumbrian Water to express our thanks for safeguarding our water supplies and for providing emergency facilities in the event of the water having to be turned off.

Launch of the Internet Café at Cornhill Village Shop on Friday, 23rd April 2010

newsimage

More than fifty residents, County Councillors Anthony Murray and Dougie Watkin, and many Chairs from the surrounding parishes attended the launch of the Internet Cafe at the Village Shop in Cornhill. The Mayor of Berwick Councillor Flora Simpson and her Escort, Councillor Alan Rogerson, undertook the formal part of the occasion by cutting the red ribbon across the entrance to the cafe.

The success of the occasion had many ingredients. The idea of locating an internet cafe within the Village Shop was that of Lynda Waite and the other family members who are the proprietors; the Parish Council was approached, because of its involvement in the creation of the Cornhill Parish Website, to seek funding for the project. The Parish Councillors enthusiastically agreed to seek funding and asked the Parish Website Working Group to manage the project. An application was made to the Big Lottery Fund – Awards for All and a grant was approved in the sum of £1650.00 to purchase equipment, furniture and to cover installation costs. Working closely with the owners of the Village Shop the members of the Website Working Group planned and coordinated the work of turning a cafe into an internet cafe: this was completed in March.

The obvious success of the launch event on the evening of Friday, 23rd April, 2010 was the result of hard work, generosity and great enthusiasm: the generosity of the Mayor of Berwick and her Escort to attend and spend more than an hour of their time, formally opening the Internet Cafe with generous words of enthusiasm and encouragement; the generosity of the owners and staff of the Village Shop in hosting the event; the generosity of the Collingwood Arms Hotel in providing food and the generosity of a local resident in providing wine: all the ingredients of an enjoyable social occasion.

The Internet Cafe offers weekly tuition to local residents. Two senior students were in attendance: Nancy Clark and Edna Jeffrey, to demonstrate the wonders of the world wide web. There is little doubt that the internet cafe will prove to be a great asset to the village of Cornhill, both for its residents and for any travellers passing through who wish to be refreshed and in touch with the world at large.

STOLEN DOGS

newsimage

A yellow Labrador and a black and tan Border/Cairn cross terrier were stolen from a farm just north of the Border in Scotland on the 1st April. A few days earlier a black Labrador and a Jack Russell terrier were stolen from a farm near Burnmouth. On both occasions a white transit van had been seen with two males in it and it is believed a smaller car with a female was seen in both areas prior to the thefts.
There was a spate of thefts of working dogs in the south of the country late last year, so once again please be vigilant.

If you have any information on these crimes, call the Police on 03456 043 043, or in emergency call 999.

Peacock Update

newsimage

It is that time of year when Hamish looks to procreate. This means that he gets up quite early to remind us all that he is ready. I believe that there have been sightings of two of the girls in the gardens of the Collingwood Arms. Whether they are playing "hard to get" or they are being fattened up, I cannot guess. It can only be a short matter of time before a new brood are hatched, and the Cornhill ostentation thus grows. I promise to keep everyone informed and if anyone things a naming ceremony for the benefit of the village would be a good idea, please do reply in the forum.

New Noticeboard for Cornhill

newsimage

Cornhill now has a brand new noticeboard on the churchyard wall. This has been beautifully made by Dennis Pereira, and kindly donated by him to the Village.

The following letter, which expresses the thanks of the Parish Council, has been sent to Dennis:

Dear Dennis,

Parish Notice Board

Members of the Parish Council, at their meeting on Monday, 17th May, 2010, asked me to convey to you their thanks for so generously making and fitting a Parish notice board in place of the board attached to the wall of the Parish Church. This contribution to the community of Cornhill-on-Tweed is a mark of your interest in the affairs of the place within which you have established your business.

Our appreciation of your generosity is recorded in the minutes of the Parish.

Yours sincerely,

David Buckle,
Chair,
Cornhill Parish Council

Advance Notification of Surface Dressing

newsimage

The Parish Council has been informed by Northumberland County Council that the C20 Cornhill to East Learmouth road is to undergo surface dressing at some time between late May and early August. Signs will be erected at either end of the road to advise of the date of works, and the public can help by removing parked vehicles by the time requested.
We are advised that this work is weather dependant, which may affect the programme.
